our locationsin Italy and USA
Our Community was founded in Rome, Italy. It is there, at the heart of the Catholic Church that we currently have three houses – our house of formation and two apostolic houses. In 2000, the Community opened our first house in the United States. We now have three houses in the USA – two in Kansas and one in Texas. In each house a daily rhythm of prayer, community life, study and apostolate takes place.
The two apostolic houses in Rome are dedicated to evangelization and outreach at the Sapienza University, where there is a collaboration with the Diocese of Rome and Jesuit Fathers in the university chaplaincy. Some of our sisters also offer spiritual assistance to the students at the high school of St. Joseph De Merode. Among all of the houses in Rome we collaborate in putting on retreats and giving formation for our Collaborators of your Joy Lay Movement.
The formation house is a house dedicated to forming future Apostles of the Interior Life and helping the women continue to discern God’s call in their life. They are guided by two or three of the Sisters who have already taken vows. The young women in formation daily attend philosophy and theology classes at the Pontifical University of St. John in Lateran, and dedicate the rest of their time to prayer, community life, and, to certain degree, also to apostolate. Their formation can last around 5-6 years.
Our community in Lawrence carries out its ministry of evangelization and spiritual direction at the Catholic Center at the University of Kansas. The first three sisters arrived in Lawrence in September 2003 where they were warmly welcomed by both staff and students alike. We engage in evangelization by approaching students individually and initiating simple conversations, that often lead them to inquire about God and the Catholic Church. With those that are desiring to grow in their relationship with God, we offer spiritual direction and also a program called Samuel Group. We participate in the various activities at the St. Lawrence Catholic center, so as to be present to the students not only during the formal spiritual direction sessions, but also in their everyday life.
In 2008 we arrived on the campus of Texas A & M to serve at the St. Mary’s Catholic Center, which is known to be a very large and active campus ministry program. The ministry of spiritual direction and spiritual formation, through giving retreats and talks, is our main apostolate at St. Mary’s. We also provide the Samuel Group discernment program. As in every house of the Apostles of the Interior Life the daily presence and witness of consecrated life and prayer is a gift we seek to give to those we minister to. Thus we open our house to the students for movie nights, Italian cooking lessons, discernment gatherings and prayer times in our chapel.
